Childrens Golf Clubs
If you are a golfer with children then I am sure you have thought about getting your child some golf clubs.
In most cases we go digging in the garage looking for old clubs we don’t need that can taken to the local golf shop, cut down fitted with some new gripsĀ (normally with 25 layers of tape so the grip fits on the cut down shaft).
Problems with cutting down childrens golf clubs
There is a big problem with doing this. Firstly, when you cut the shaft down it has a major effect on the swingweight. The club head was originally designed to be fitted with a shaft at a certain length to achieve a specified swingweight. By cutting the shaft down we have messed all that up and made the club exceptionally heavy.
Secondly, every shaft manufactured has a trimming chart, most shafts have a tip trim (to determine flex) and a butt trim (to determine length). Once the shaft is cut down it cannot flex properly (as far as kickpoint goes) and it will be super stiff!
Thirdly, the lie angle will be far out in most cases. This will have an effect on the direction.
Lastly, It is unlikely the grip will fit nicely and the clubmaker will have to use a whole load of tape to get the grip installed successfully.
As you can see from above by cutting down old golf clubs for our children we are actually making it really hard for them to hit the ball nicely and will guarantee bad habits in the swing from day one.
What to do
Although many people don’t want to spend the money on a decent set of childrens clubs it will pay off big time in the long run as your child is more likely to enjoy golf as he will hit the ball a lot better.
I would recommend the Nike Tw Kid’s Red Box Golf Set available at Amazon. It is great value for money and the clubs are weighted properly. Also it’s under 100 bucks! Click here to get some more information.
