Need some new grips, why not change them yourself. Once you learn how to do this you will save some money and also have the ability to change the sizing by adding extra layers of tape under the grip if required.
What you will need ?
- Small Vise
- Rubber Vise Clamp (to hold the club while you fit the grip)
- Stanley Knife with Hooked Blade (to cut off old grip)
- Double Sided Grip Tape
- Solvent (Mineral Turpentine works really well)
- New Grips
Amazon has a nice grip kit, you will need to get turpentine and your hooked blade separately. Amazon Grip Kit (13 Golf pride grips, tape and clamp)
Once you have everything ready you need to remove the old grips first. If you have graphite shafts then you must be careful with the hooked blade not to cut into the shaft itself. Just take your time and slowly cut through the old grip from the bottom to the top and then pull it off.
Next, remove the old tape as you normally end up with a mess pulling the grip off. If the old tape looks good and you want a slightly bigger grip anyway then you can leave it on.
Then attach the new tape to the top off the shaft making sure not to get any wrinkles, you don’t want to feel them through the grip! If you want the grips slightly bigger you can build up a couple of extra wraps of tape (use masking tape for the build wraps, its cheaper than the double sided grip tape). Some people like the grip a bit bigger under the right hand, you can always cut a half strip of tape to thicken this area up.
Once you have your tape ready all you need to do is fit the new grip. Put the shaft in your vise clamp (not too tight, graphite can crack under pressure) and get your new grip ready. You need to pour some turpentine on the tape and a little bit inside the new grip. Slide the new grip onto the shaft (making sure it is ALL the way on).
Lastly, put the club down in the playing position, close one eye, look down the shaft and gently move the grip until it looks straight. Then give it a couple of hours to dry and you are ready to go!
All of this sounds fairly easy and to be honest it is, but, your first time will be a little bit challenging but if you mess it up you can always pull of the grip (before it dries) and start again until you get it right!
